How to apply Google Analytics in iWeb 09'

If your not familiar with Google Analytics this is a service provided by Google for tracking traffic to your website(s). It is a great tool for anyone with a website big or small. If you haven't yet signed up click here and you can read more about the service.

Here we go:

Once you have signed up and created an account you need to go into your Account and navigate to your Analytics Settings/Profile Settings/Tracking and there you will see a Tracking Code.

This code is the little bit of magic needed to get this whole equation to work. What you need to do next is make sure you have selected the New Tracking Code which should be selected by Default and Copy the code below. Once you have copied the code you need to open up iWeb and start with the first page you have created on your site.

In the latest version of iWeb 09' click on the Show Media Tab if if it's not already open.

Click and drag the HTML Snippet Button and to your webpage. The Button will appear probably in the center of your Webpage. You should move it down to the bottom of your page out of the way and in the open area of the HTML Snippet you will Paste the Tracking Code you copied earlier and make sure you click APPLY at the bottom. Don't forget this or else it will not work!

Once this is done you are set and can now apply the same method to each and every page you want to track! It's that easy.

Hope this helps just take it step by step and normally within 24 hours Google will have your site successfully tracked.

Can you tell us what this action will do to the ability to leave comments on iWeb '09 created / MobileMe hosted blogs ?

Karl-
All this does is track your website statistics and should have no issues with the ability to leave comments on your blog. Are you having problems?

MACNERD-
Yes , I am having problems, as are many, many, many using iWeb for blogging and trying to use GA.
Comments become disabled.
I have to use statcounter and it is not good

We will look into your problem and try and help you find a solution. Thanks for letting us know.

Karl-
Apple released a bunch of iLife updates today and was wondering if after updating does your problem still exist?

This didn't work for me. When I check the source code after inserting the HTML snippet, the Analytics code is just plain not there. I tried it quite a few times.

to my knowledge inserting the GA code into an HTML snippet has never worked on Iweb. Its now more of an issue as most people want to use Iweb to upload their sites ( me included) Having searched everywhere all i can see is articles on publishing to folders and then editing to get the GA to work.

We have had success several times using this method in iWeb when publishing to a third party service provider. There does seem to be an issue with MobileMe hosted websites which we are trying to figure out what is happening there. Otherwise this method has worked for us fine. Is it not tracking for you?

I tried this, but iWeb replaces my code with some type of widget script. I can't past it because some tags are not allowed.
But it starts with a class named:
com-apple-iweb-widget-HTMLRegion

None of the GA code is viewable in the page source.

If your just copying the code given to you by google and pasting it into the HTML Snippet you should be getting results provided your getting the right code from Google.

shouldn't the pasted code be viewable in the page source? I don't see it there either.

see this thread - the code needs to go in the footer

Emily-
Thanks for directing us to the support string. We have actually not had any issues placing the code at the bottom of the page. We have also tried the method mentioned placing the code in the Footer and had success as well. In viewing the code it looks like your answer is in the Apple Support string you linked.

Let us know if you come across any other issues.

I, too, am an iWeb user and there continues to be a problem with the comments function. They appear, they disappear, and it seems to be related to Google Analytics OR the iWeb SEO Tool.
It is several months later since the last post on this topic. Any new fixes or advice since then? Thanks...

I'm with RG Coleman. Found this article while searching for a fix for the disabling of comments (related to GA).

To install the Google Analytics script using the HTML widget, you have to hold down the COMMAND key and then click and drag the HTML widget onto the page. This will place it in the footer automatically. Then paste your code and apply. Publish and you should be all set. Worked for me.

Comments are still disabled when the GA code gets put on the page though.... still waiting for a fix on that one.

Hi there, I noticed ppl talking about iWeb for blogs. I have iWeb 09, and the blog function in it as far as I can tell doesn't allow ppl to post replies etc like Wordpress does.

I have an iWeb website hosted with MobileMe, using the iWeb blog page. Is there any way to allow replies etc for my blog posts (or some workaround)?

Cheers.

You will need to have a MobileMe account to utilize comments within iWeb

I have been trying to figure this out for a while. Your post was the easiest to understand and most straight forward I have found. Thanks.

Thanks, very helpful

Thank you - I agree it works with placing in the footer and using the html widget copy and paste. It took a couple of tries and eventually it went with the advance code that google supplied. not sure why but your advice put me on the right track to success. Thank you!

Hi,
I applied my snippet with the Google analytic code, hit apply, and put it in my footer.
When I check it in my Google account it is not detected.
My site is forwarded and masked...but I pasted my actual iWeb address page in the google account.
(following?)

Any suggestions?

I have google analytics on an iWeb-built, Mobile-Me-Hosted website. I used the HTML snippet and used the command key to drag it into the footer. Google shows that the code is recognized-- for those confused, I don't believe it's in the source code at all. It's in a javascript running concurrently, or something. That part gets fuzzy for me.

The problem I'm having is that all of our traffic shows up as direct traffic. Some of it must be coming from links/search engines, and I've tested it several times, but it still comes up as direct.

I THINK that the reason for this is that iWeb-- or mobile me?-- seems to be creating a index.html page that then invisible forwards to the first page that I created. I can, using cyberduck, hack that index.html and put the google analytics code directly on it, but it gets replaced every time we update the site in this case. The site isn't for me, so going back and replacing the invisible ndex.html after each publish isn't an option-- is there a way to fix this?
