This is an update for any users that updated from 10.6 straight to 10.6.3. Not all users will need this update. If you updated from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 you will not need this update. If it does not show up in your Software Update you do not need the update! Please check your Software Update to see if you qualify for the update. If you need to download the combo update manually a link is provided here.

iPad WiFi Issues...

So there is plenty of talk about the iPad and its first major issue for some but not all owners of iPads. It seems that some users are encountering WiFi dropouts or weak signal when the iPad is laid down on a flat surface. Apple has released a support document regarding the issue and I would assume we would see a software fix for this in a future release. Until then here are some solutions to try and fix your problem.

Some users have also noticed the problem resolves itself when you increase the brightness of the iPad. This sounds very odd but whatever works right!

Mac OS 10.6.3 Released

Go ahead and check your software update as a new version of Snow Leopard was released today so go grab that update!

Here are some of the changes:

Removing Old Email Addresses in Apple Mail

Here is a real easy fix to removing those old email addresses that Apple Mail auto references when sending an email. All you have to do is open up the Mail program and go up to the Window Menu and scroll down to Previous Recipients.

Once that window is open you can sort by Name and you'll see those old email addresses that Mail keeps referring to. You can just click the email address you want to delete and hit delete and your good to go.

How to integrate Facebook with iChat

Now that Facebook supports Jabber you can integrate it into your favorite IM Client. Here is how to set it up.

1. You need to find your Facebook username by going to http://www.facebook.com/your_user/

2. Then you can open up iChat and under the Preferences Menu your going to click on the Accounts tab and setup a new Jabber Account

3. The Account name is your_user@chat.facebook.com and then you need to enter you Facebook Password

4. Finally you need to click the little drop down arrow which you can see in the photo and for the Server Name you need to put chat.facebook.com and in the Port column enter 5222 and then click Done.

5. You are now communicating with your buddy in high school that your not sure you want to be able to talk to whenever you want...

File Sharing Made Easy with Dropbox

If you haven't heard of Dropbox yet then we recommend going over to there site and checking it out. Basically this is a cloud based storage service that allows a seamless way to share files with anyone in the world on either your Mac or iPhone! The iPhone app is great when you need to send something quick and your not in front of your Mac. You can take advantage of their free 2gb account and start sharing those large files, photos, songs that are too large to email and you can upgrade to 100gb if you need massive amounts of storage. They also provide a very easy way to get more space for Free by referring others to their service. We know there are plenty of cloud based services out there now but the seamless integration of Dropbox with your Mac and iPhone is hands down the best we've seen.

Cleaning up iTunes Duplicates

So your iTunes Library is overflowing with duplicate tracks that just magically appeared??? Instead of investing in third party software to try and sort the problem out why not just use iTunes itself to fix your issue. If you look under the File Menu in iTunes you will see "Show Duplicates" now hold down the Option key and you will see the option change to "Show Exact Duplicates". This can really come in handy when trying to keep tracks that are just on different albums and aren't necessarily duplicates.

Fix for GrowlMail plugin broken with 10.6.2 update

So assuming most users running Snow Leopard updated to the latest version 10.6.2 today, and if you use Apple Mail and the Growl Mail Plugin you noticed an error when opening up Mail after the update that the plugin was disabled because it was not compatible! Yowsers! It turns out the current version will still work with a little help from the Terminal. Here we go.

1. Make sure Apple Mail is quit if it was open.

2. Once the plugin gets disabled it is placed in your HD/Users/Library/Mail/Bundles (Disabled) folder. What you need to do is move the folder labeled GrowlMail.mailbundle from the "Disabled" folder back into the Bundles folder right above it.

3. Then you need to open up the Terminal which is located in your Utilities folder.

4. Once the Terminal is open your going to copy and paste two separate elements into it.

The first one is:

defaults write ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/Info SupportedPluginCompatibilityUUIDs -array-add "2F0CF6F9-35BA-4812-9CB2-155C0FDB9B0F"

The second one is:

defaults write ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/Info SupportedPluginCompatibilityUUIDs -array-add "0CB5F2A0-A173-4809-86E3-9317261F1745"

5. After completing this you should be able to open Apple Mail and you will not see the error upon opening the App and all is well with our GrowlMail Plugin! Obviously an update from the guys over there will fix the issue and it sounds like this might happen everytime Apple updates the OS! Either way the plug-in is a must have, and I can't thank the Team over there enough for all their hard work.

Important Apple TV 3.0.1 update released

Anyone who has upgraded there current Apple TV software to 3.0 recently should immediately upgrade to 3.0.1 which Apple recently issued this weekend in regards to content temporarily disappearing until a resync is done on the device.

Top "10" iPhone Battery Saving Tips

So your one of the many out there with iPhone Battery complaints. Here is a list of several things that will help increase the overall battery life of your iPhone. They are listed in no particular order and whether you do some or all of these tips this is just a useful guide to getting more from your iPhone.

1. Turn off Push Notifications which is located in the Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars/Fetch. In addition to turning this off you could also set the Fetch option to "Manually".

2. Turn off Bluetooth when not in use. This can be found in the Settings Application.

3. Turn off Location Services which can be found in Settings/General tab. You will be prompted to turn it "ON" when using the Maps Application so my advice would be to use it when necessary.

4. Turn off 3g when you don't need it and just leave EDGE on This can be found in the Settings/Network tab.

5. Turn your Brightness down to under 50%. This can be found in the Settings/Brightness. You can keep Auto Brightness On but lowering the slider here will really help the life of your battery.

6. Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use. This can be found in the Settings App. In addition to turning off WiFi when not in use make sure you also turn off the "Ask to Join Networks" option inside the Wi-Fi tab.

7. Set your Auto-Lock to 1 Minute. This can be found in the Settings/General Tab. Another huge battery saver.

8. Turn off Notifications. This can be found in the Settings App as well. This is not a real big battery saver but any little bit helps.

9. Turn off Vibrate which is located in the Settings/Sounds Tab. You can just turn off the option for Vibrate for your Ring. Once again not a huge battery saver.

10. Turn off Repeat Alert in the Settings/Messages option. All this does is just allow one alert when receiving a SMS.

In conclusion it never hurts to turn off your iPhone at night. I also recommend calibrating your iPhone battery once every couple months which will help refresh your battery to maximize the life of your iPhone.

Snow Leopard Internet Issues

I have recently encountered several users experiencing "No Wireless Internet Connections" after updating to Snow Leopard. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue. Most of the problems seem to be with wireless not wired connections.

1. You can go up to your Airport Bars in your Menu Bar and toggle the Airport On and Off.
2. If that doesn't work you can try restarting your Wireless Router as well as your Mac.
3. Finally if all else fails you can try this recipe which should lead to success
-Go into your router's administration page and find your DNS server(s).
-Open up your Network Preferences in your System Preferences window.
-Click on the Advanced section in the lower right hand corner, click on the DNS tab.
-Manually add the DNS servers you found in Step 1
-Save and apply the changes.

You should now be able to go online!

Quicksilver Alternative from Google...

We all know how powerful and perfect Quicksilver is for that one click solution to launching applications or navigating your Mac for a file. As of today it looks like there is a new player in the game. Google has just released a very Quicksilver like application for FREE called quick search box

The Application does just about everything Quicksilver does and then some. We have tried it over here and it is working as expected and surprisingly well for a first release. It also has a very small memory footprint which keeps your system from bogging down. The option to remove the icon from the dock and place in the Menu are welcome and the Search option remembers your recent searches quite well and puts the items or applications that you use most at the forefront of the search.

Another very positive note about the app is that it's open source which means third party developers can utilize the app to integrate more features and ideas.

You do need to be running 10.5 Leopard to install but give it a try and see if your able to make the switch...we are slowly transitioning.

Charge your iPhone using any Mac

There are 2 ways to achieve this here is the first and easiest way:

To get this to work you will have needed to plug your iPhone or iPod into your Mac prior and unchecked the Automatically Sync option in the Summary Tab within the iPhone Summary Window.

With this unchecked you now need to manually sync your phone with your Mac but it will allow you to be able to plug your device into any machine without the worry of your iPhone syncing with the other machine.

Here is the second option:

The second option works great if you want to keep the Automatic Sync option checked on your machine. Before you go to plug your iPhone into the Third Party Mac just make sure you hold down the Command + Option keys upon the launch of iTunes. You should see a message like this

Don't be alarmed just continue on and your device will charge as needed without any hassle.

My Trash will not Empty!!

Here is a quick way to fix those stuck items that will not empty in your Trash.

Press and hold the mouse button on the Trash icon in the Dock. The context menu for Trash will display.
Press and hold the Option key.
Select Empty Trash from the context menu for Trash.
Release the Option key.

Keeping your Mac's Trash clean will free up HD Space so it's a good habit to keep it empty.

Setting up Hotmail in Apple Mail

Finally Hotmail in Apple Mail!! If you haven't set this up already here is a quick walkthrough on getting setup.

Start Mail

Go to Mail » Preferences, and click on Accounts.
Click on the plus button (lower left) to add a new account.
Type must say POP, and give the account a description.

Account Info:

Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
Username: Your Hotmail address (with @hotmail.com)
Password: Your Hotmail password
Click on Continue

Set the Outgoing Server to smtp.live.com

You should be good to go sync, send, and get your emails

Creating Ringtones for your iPhone

Here is a quick and simple way to create ringtones for your iPhone using iLife 08' or 09'. The program your going to use is GarageBand. In iLife 09' upon opening GarageBand you have a choice to choose "iPhone Ringtone" as a Project option to be opened. If your using iLife 08' just open a normal project with the default settings. After opening your project you can then click on the Media Browser Button:

Once opened choose your Audio in the Browser and just drag it into the main Garage Band Window. Once you have your song inserted on a track we find it easiest to turn the Loop Option on as well as toggle the LCD Panel to time so we can see how long the loop were creating will be

You will then see a yellow highlight above the song you dragged in and there you can adjust the loop to your liking and we suggest not making your ringtone longer then 40-42 seconds. The ringtone will not be able to be exported if its longer regardless. Once you have your ringtone set you can then go up to the Share Menu

Your ringtone will then be sent to iTunes where you can rename it if you iike. Finally just plug in your iPhone and Sync and your good to go.

Backing up your Mac

We cannot say enough about backing up your Mac on a frequent basis. It's typically the one week or day you decide not to run a backup that something happens. We are huge fans of Time Machine which is the built in backup functionality built into Mac OS X Leopard. It works great is easy to use and literally with a single click your backing up your machine. We also wanted to offer this option if your looking for a solid program that will work on either 10.4 or 10.5 if your not using Time Machine. The application is "FREE" of course and has been around for quite some time meaning its stability is there as one of the top in its class for backing up your Mac. The Application is called Carbon Copy Cloner. We have used this program several times on machines without any issues and if your operating on 10.4 this program is our Number One pick for backups. Check it out if you haven't already and we can't stress enough how just backing up your machine each night could save weeks of headaches and madness when for some reason YOUR MAC HAS CRASHED!

If your looking to get that massive iTunes Library in shape and organized here is a great option Tune Up. This program not only cleans up your Songs (Album Titles/Song Names) but also grabs the Cover Art for you. I know Apple does this for you free...but the problem is if the songs are mislabeled no dice.
Anyways we tested Tune Up over here and it works just as described. It was very easy to use and fast. It's not freeware but well worth the money if your iTunes has seen better days. You get the first 500 songs free so give it a try.

5 steps to setup a Shared Folder in 10.5 on your Mac

Setting up a shared folder is a great way to send or receive files on your Local Network from anyone. It saves the time of using a Flash Drive or HardDrive to send and receive files. Here is a quick 5 step process to get everything working.

First -- go to your System Preferences which is located under the Apple Menu

Second -- click on the Sharing Option in the System Preferences

Third -- check the File Sharing Option and you should notice your Public Folder appear on the right side to share.

Fourth -- You can setup Access Privileges to allow Specific Access for Users on the Network

Fifth -- You can now drop files into your Shared Folders Drop Box to share with everyone on your Network

Microsoft Office 2008 Save Issue

We have come across this issue on several occasions and wanted to share the fix with everyone. The problem is receiving a Microsoft Word or Excel document in the .docx format and you cannot open it. The problem stems from the sender using Office 2008 and unfortunately the default preference is there new format for saving which is .docx. If you do not have the Office 2008 and only have 2004 you will not be able to open the file.

The fix is very easy and all you need to do is open up Microsoft Word and under the Word Menu navigate down to Preferences. There you should see this window

Once your in that Window click on the "Save" Option and then go down to the bottom to the "Save File As" pulldown and choose the second Option "Word 97-2004 doc" this should solve all your problems and both 2004 and 2008 Office users can now get your documents without a problem!

This also works the same for Microsoft Excel.

How to apply Google Analytics in iWeb 09'

If your not familiar with Google Analytics this is a service provided by Google for tracking traffic to your website(s). It is a great tool for anyone with a website big or small. If you haven't yet signed up click here and you can read more about the service.

Here we go:

Once you have signed up and created an account you need to go into your Account and navigate to your Analytics Settings/Profile Settings/Tracking and there you will see a Tracking Code.

This code is the little bit of magic needed to get this whole equation to work. What you need to do next is make sure you have selected the New Tracking Code which should be selected by Default and Copy the code below. Once you have copied the code you need to open up iWeb and start with the first page you have created on your site.

In the latest version of iWeb 09' click on the Show Media Tab if if it's not already open.

Click and drag the HTML Snippet Button and to your webpage. The Button will appear probably in the center of your Webpage. You should move it down to the bottom of your page out of the way and in the open area of the HTML Snippet you will Paste the Tracking Code you copied earlier and make sure you click APPLY at the bottom. Don't forget this or else it will not work!

Once this is done you are set and can now apply the same method to each and every page you want to track! It's that easy.

Hope this helps just take it step by step and normally within 24 hours Google will have your site successfully tracked.

Clear your photos off your iPhone

We have come across this issue and figured this might help others. If you have taken too many photos on your phone with your built-in iPhone Camera and want to clear them off your phone this fix will free up space and save time when plugging your phone in when syncing.

1. Plug in your iPhone to your Mac with your USB Cable.

2. Open up your Applications folder and in there is an Application called "Image Capture", open up that Application and you will notice your iPhone appears in the Application itself.

3. Here you will have a choice to Download your Photos but before you do so click the Options button in the lower left hand corner.

4. Once your in the Options Tab make sure you choose "Delete items from camera after downloading" then click "OK" to return to the Previous Screen

5. Then Click on the "Download To:" pulldown and choose "Other" and create a folder on your Desktop. This is where all your pictures are going to be downloaded prior to being deleted from your Phone.

6. You then notice back in the window that you have an option to "Download Some" or "Download All". This choice is up to you but if your trying to clean things up choose "Download All"

7. After eveything downloads its finished! Now when you go back into your Phone your "Camera Roll" should be empty.

8. Remember that all those pictures are still in the folder you specified in case you don't have them already in iPhoto. You can then drag them over to iPhoto if you want so nothing should be lost.

Safari 4 beta and Hotmail Fix

We ran across this issue in the Safari 4 build and the problems occurs when trying to check your Hotmail Account online. You will be able to log in and see your messages but not click or read anything.

Here is the fix for now if you chose to upgrade and try the new Safari.

Once Safari is open go to Safari/Preference Menu. Once your in there go to the Advanced Tab and check the Option to "Show Develop menu in menu bar"

Now you can click back to Safari and you should see a Develop Menu in the Finder bar. Click on the Develop Menu and at the Top as one of the Menu Options scroll down to User Agent and choose a Firefox Selection.

Your Hotmail should now work accordingly and you should be able to read and answer emails.

You forgot your "Master Password" on your Mac!

This tip has come in handy several times so let's get to it and get you on your Mac.

What you'll need is your Installer Disc that came with your Machine when you bought it. Once you've found the disc insert it and restart your machine. Upon restart hold down the "C" Key which is a keyboard shortcut for booting off the disc in your Mac. This may take a little longer then normal to boot but once you see the install screen come up you can let go of the key.

Now were not going to install anything, instead if you go up to the Menu options at the top and navigate to the Utilities/Menu and scroll down to Reset Password. From there you choose your Startup Disk and User that you want to Reset the Password for. You then enter the new password and your good to go!

How to open multiple iPhoto Libraries

This is a great trick to allow multiple libraries on the same machine. All you need to do is hold down the Option Key on your keyboard upon opening up iPhoto. In iPhoto 09' you should see a window like this

Choose the library of choice and your good to go.

This tip also works with iTunes. You can have your Music Library on your internal Hard Drive and a larger library on an External Drive.

How to Delete a Single Time Machine Backup

Enter Time Machine and navigate to the backup you want to delete and use the actions menu(the pulldown with the asterik) in the Toolbar. There you will see the option to delete the backup.

Also, when using the actions menu, with a file or folder selected there is an option to delete all instances of the file/folder from all backups.

This is a great way to free up space on your External Hard Drive if needed.

Common Mac Startup Key Combinations

C You start from a bootable CD such as your install DVD in the drive.

D Perform an Apple Hard ware test if you have your install DVD in the drive.

N Boot from a network compatible server. Only useful if you have the server.

T Start up in Target Disk mode. in other words if your connected to someone via Firewire your Mac will appear as a drive on their desktop

Option Key Here you can pick which drive you want to boot from.

Option+N Similar to the item above, except you get given the choice of booting from a network disk.

Command + S Single User Mode. This is where you can run a lot of high level tasks as a single user. Probably not for newbies.

Shift Start up in safe mode. Very useful if you have a problem and need an environment where you don’t want unnecessary things loaded. A good bet if you get Kernel panics during boot.

Option + Command + P + R Reset PRAM

Hold Eject or F12 or Mouse Button- This will eject anything that is in the disk drive.

Sync your iCal Subscribed Calendars with your iPhone

1. Select a subscription calendar.

2. Choose File/Export and just Export the Shared Calendar to your Desktop on your Mac with a slightly different name then the subscribed calendar.

3. Choose File/Import… to import the iCal file you just created. The Mac will ask which calendar you want to add the events to, choose New Calendar. It will create a new local calendar with the same name as the file.

4. Then to delete the subscription calendar hold the Control key and click on the calendar and scroll down to delete it.

5. Now you can assign the calendar a color and then let them sync up to your iPhone!

This is great for getting Birthdays sync'd on your iPhone.

Let me give you an example if your confused. If you don’t already have this widget I highly recommend downloading iStat Pro. Its a free widget that monitors all your systems vital statistics. If you don’t like widgets you can download iStat Menu which sits in your Menu Bar. It's extremely important if issues do come up with your machine that this be one of the first places you check to see what's going on. You will get in the habit of checking your System Stats periodically which is a great routine to get in to.
